What are the various manufacturing types of API 5L Welded Pipe?
API 5L Welded Pipe is available in various grades such as Gr B, X52, X60, X42, X46, X56, PSL1 and PSL 2. These are called as line pipes and are developed to work in various working environments. These pipes generally work in extreme situations, corrosion environments, low and high temperatures and in H2S conditions for sour services. Therefore, high-quality carbon steel is used to develop them. These welded pipes are available in different grade feature at different levels such as common class, medium, high level, and premium high, medium and high. They also vary in mechanical strength and chemical composition.
API 5L Gr. B PSL 1/PSL 2 and sour service pipe falls into a category of common class. API 5L Welded Pipe of grade X42, 46 and 52 comes in medium category whereas X56 comes in both medium and high category. API 5L X 60/ X65 PSL 1 or2 and PSL 2 LSAW line pipe comes in high level. API 5L X 70 and X 80 comes in the premium high category.
Manufacturing types of welded pipe
There are three manufacturing types – LSAW or longitudinally submerged arc welding, ERW or electric resistance welding, and SSAW or spirally submerged arc welding types. The LSAW and SSAW welding types are SAW pipe which is manufacture using submerged arc soldering process. This process is used to develop high-density API 5L Welded Pipe. The ERW pipe is manufactured using high-frequency welding that yields resistance pipes. Since high frequency is used therefore ultra – IF welding is done. This process is different from the process used for DC welded pipe.
