Description of API 5L X46 Welded Pipe manufacturing process
API 5L X46 Welded Pipe is a medium class pipe which is prepared using various manufacturing process. Depending upon the process there are various types of these welded pipes. They are two different levels of specifications for all pipes whether seamless or welded which is given by the API or American petroleum institute. Manufacturers should build according to those specifications and standards. In general, there are 3 manufacturing process- ERW, LSAW, and SSAW. Each process yields different types of pipes. These are used in various environments. All these processes result in high quality and highly efficient pipes.
This process is used to manufacture pipes 24 inches or 609 nm pipes. A sheet is converted into a cylindrical shape using cold forming process. The sheet is then heated by current till the edges of sheet form a bond. Initially, A.C. current of low frequency is used which is later superseded by high frequency. Both low and high-frequency ERW process give a high-quality API 5L X46 Welded Pipe.
UOE method is used to produce LSAW pipes. A carbide milling equipment bevels the edges of plates which are then turned into U shape. A U press is used to make this shape followed by an O press which forms O shape. The pipe is then welded both internally and externally. A cold expansion process is performed followed by hydrostatic testing and inspection process.
Hot rolled coiled steel is welded under the normal temperature which undergoes coil probe, level milling, welding and cutting, visual inspection and many more.
However, all the three process used to make API 5L X46 Welded Pipe differ from each other but produce good quality pipes.
