API 5L X80 PSL2 Pipe covers both welded and seamless pipes. The welded pipes are categorized into different types such as straight seam submerged arc, spiral submerged and resistance welded pipe. There is a little difference in all these types. The seamless pipes are the small diameter pipes which are used more than the welded pipe. The typical range of diameter for these pipes is less than 6 inch or 150 mm. However, using hot rolled manufacturing process the diameter can be increased up to 20 inches or 508 mm. the diameter can also increase up to 40 inches or 1016 mm by using hot expanding process.
API 5L cover different steel grades where the higher grade pipe such as API 5L X80 PSL2 Pipe follows strict carbon control to get high mechanical strength. Moreover, the chemical elements content varies for different grades. The welded pipe on other hand needs less carbon and sulfur content. They also differ in the term of delivery conditions such as normalizing rolled, as rolled, normalizing formed, quenched and tempered, thermomechanical rolled and normalized and tempered.
Here in API 5L X80 PSL2 Pipe, the number represented by grade X defines the minimum yield strength of pipe (1000 psi). For PSL 2 pipe, the strength is written in rounded form. These PSL 2 pipes are different from PSL 1 pipes in terms of mechanical properties, chemical composition, testing requirements and more. PSL 2 is less strict in tensile properties, nondestructive testing, impact work and other indicators.
Moreover, API 5L X80 PSL2 Pipe does not need impact performance.
